Summary: This book takes place at a school for future princesses, princes, and fairytale villains. Each student must sign their name in the Storybook of Legends, which seals their fate forever. Raven Queen is destined to be just like her mother, the famous Evil Queen, but she’s not sure that’s the future she wants for herself. The daughter of Snow White (and also Raven’s roommate), Apple, is thrilled to get the happy ending her mother got, but Raven’s decision could put Apple’s future in jeopardy.

Recommendation: I loved this book series when I was a child, and I would reread the Storybook of Legends all the time. It also is an animated series and there are very cute dolls of the characters that are perfect for kids. If you or your child love Monster High, I would highly recommend this series because they both follow unique students at a magical high school. I’d also especially recommend this series to anyone with an interest in princesses or fairytales, as there are countless references within the book.

The World According to Humphrey | Betty G. Birney

Summary: This book follows a very smart classroom pet hamster named Humphrey. When substitute teacher, Ms. Mac, leaves the school for good, Humphrey is put into the care of Mrs. Brisbane, who wants nothing to do with him. To avoid having to take care of him, Humphrey gets sent to the homes of the children in his class every weekend. Using his impressive problem-solving skills and his kindness, Humphrey helps the children overcome their fears and struggles. Can he do the same for Mrs. Brisbane and win her over?

Recommendation: When I was a kid, my second grade teacher read us the entire Humphrey series and I fell in love with it. Humphrey is an amazing and unique protagonist who is a great influence on young kids, while still making them laugh. He teaches children the importance of helping others, never giving up, and being yourself. Although Humphrey is a chapter book, the writing style is easy to read and get used to. I would recommend this book to anyone who often reads to their young children, as well as kids who are transitioning from smaller books to chapter books.
